REVIEW - THE GREAT PEACE... THE GATHERING OF GOOD MINDS CD-ROM

The Great Peace ... The Gathering of Good Minds, CD-ROM is a pathbreaking work in Iroquois Studies. Ray Skye and his staff have assembled an impressive array of textual and visual material that is a welcome addition to any personal, public or university library. Since much of Iroquois culture is oral and visual and thus transcends the written word, this CD-ROM goes a long way to give the viewer a better sense of the nature of the Iroquois Great Law.

As a scholar of the Iroquois Great Law, I can say that this project is a welcome and necessary addition to the materials that we have on Iroquois Studies. Moreover, the fact that it was produced by Iroquois (Haudensaunee) people makes the project even more appealing. This new format enables the presentation of the Iroquois Great Law in variety of modes and this makes the project a dynamic and innovative endeavor. Some scholars and Iroquois elders may quibble about content and interpretation but this is to be expected in any complex subject, but this CD-ROM contains a great deal of noteworthy information in a whole new format and that is exciting and refreshing. Through this CD-ROM format, the materials relating to the Iroquois Great Law are transformed from an orthodox and dry textual analysis in the printed word to a multimedia presentation of a very rich and varied tradition. I commend the authors of this CD-ROM and recommend this work to individuals and institutions that want to improve and widen their collections relating to the study of the Iroquois.
