Grand Council Challenge

Purpose:

To learn or reinforce knowledge of the seating plan of the Grand Council of the Iroquois Confederacy;

To learn or reinforce the knowledge of the number of Chiefs to represent each of the Five Nations in the Confederacy Council;

To give students the opportunity to hear the individual names of the 50 Chiefs in the language of their particular Nation and to hear the English translation of that name.

Playing the Activity:

Names of the Five Nations appear in the box in the upper right corner. Click on one of the Nations, hold the mouse button and drag the name to the bench where you think that Nation sits. Release the button. If correct, the name will stay; if incorrect the name will return to the box for you to try again. All Five Nations must be placed in order to proceed.

The second part involves the number of Chiefs that represent each Nation. Use the same click, drag, release sequence to place the correct number of Chiefs for each of the Nations. If correct, the Chiefs appear on the bench; if incorrect the number returns to the box. All Chiefs must be placed in order to proceed.

The final phase of the activity is the option to hear the titles of each of the 50 Chiefs in the language of his Nation, along with a translation of the title. First, click on a Nation. The Chiefs will appear. As you role the cursor over a Chief, he will stand. Click on the Chief and he will say his title and the translation.

Note: The titles of the Chiefs also appear in the Condolence Cane section and Level III of the Council Fire section, screen 88.
